Vermeer and Interlune Develop Electric Lunar Excavator

Vermeer and Interlune are taking heavy equipment technology beyond Earth with a new project focused on developing a full-scale electric excavator for future lunar resource mining.


The two companies are expanding their partnership to develop excavation equipment and supporting systems for operations on the Moon. The full-scale prototype is designed to excavate and handle up to 100 metric tons of lunar material per hour, making it one of the more ambitious projects in electric excavation technology.


Unlike conventional construction machinery, the lunar excavator must operate without an atmosphere and withstand extreme temperature conditions. Electric power, autonomous operation, remote control and equipment reliability are therefore key parts of the development.


The project is aimed at supporting future lunar resource extraction, including the collection and processing of lunar regolith. Vermeer and Interlune are targeting a mission-ready system by 2028.


Although the project is designed for the Moon, its technology could have implications for the wider heavy equipment industry. Electric excavators, autonomous construction equipment and remote-controlled mining machinery are already becoming important areas of development on Earth.


The Vermeer-Interlune project highlights a broader trend in the industry: the next generation of excavators and heavy machinery is moving toward electrification, automation and remote operation.


From construction sites and mining operations to future lunar projects, excavation technology continues to expand into new environments.
